Between the Rivers Historic District

Rome is home to the largest Victorian Era District in the state of Georgia. This area, which lies between the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers, is the site of Rome’s founding in 1834 and where early business and industry served the new town. As the area “Between the Rivers” continued to grow, the region was ravaged by the Civil War and much of Rome was burned. From the ashes, the spirit of Rome emerged and rebuilt the community into a thriving town. This district sits in the shadow of Rome’s landmark, the City Clocktower, which has kept watch over Rome since 1872.

More recent developments have given rise to new communities within the district, including Riverbend Off Broad and Hoyt Hill by the River.
